  • Recently, Super typhoon Rai caused havoc in the Philippines.
    • Typhoon Rai, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Odette, is currently a powerful tropical cyclone over the South China Sea which recently passed through the Philippines.

About the Philippines 

  • Capital: Manila
  • Location: Archipelago country, part of  Southeast Asia & located in the western Pacific Ocean.
  • Naming: The Philippines takes its name from Philip II, who was king of Spain during the Spanish colonization of the islands in the 16th century.
  • Surrounded by:  
    • East: Philippine Sea 
    • South: Celebes- Sea to the south, the Sulu Sea to the southwest, 
    • West & North:  South- China Sea to the west and north. 

  • Shares maritime borders with:
    • North: Taiwan & Japan (NE)
    • East: Palau 
    • South: Indonesia,  Malaysia and Brunei to the southwest
    • West: Vietnam and China to the northwest.
