In News: Union government’s eSanjeevani completes 30 lakh consultations, serving 35000 patients each day.

About eSanjeevani

  • ‘eSanjeevani’, is a web-based comprehensive telemedicine solution launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • It is modeled on ‘Sanjeevani’ CDAC Mohali’s’ flagship integrated telemedicine solution.
  • Benefits
    • Extended reach of specialized healthcare services to masses in both rural areas and isolated communities.
    • Enhancing quality of medical services.
    • Addressing issues pertaining to uneven distribution
    • Shortage of infrastructural as well as human resources.
    • Makes healthcare services equitable by bridging the digital divide.
    • Can also provide medical education to interns , people across various Common Service Centers (CSCs), etc.
  • eSanjeevani is operational in 31 States and UTs and daily over 35,000 patients across the country are using this innovative digital medium.
  • Two variants of eSanjeevani
    • Doctor to doctor (eSanjeevani AB-HWC) telemedicine platform based on hub and spoke model
    • Patient to doctor telemedicine platform (eSanjeevani OPD) which provides outpatient services to the citizens in the confines of their homes.

Achievements of eSanjeevani

  • eSanjeevani AB-HWC is being implemented at Health and Wellness Centres under Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
    • Aim: By December 2022 it will be made operational at 1,55,000 Health and Wellness Centres across India.
    • Rolled out in 2019 in Andhra Pradesh, the first State to roll out eSanjeevani AB-HWC services.
  • eSanjeevani OPD: Provides digital health services to the citizens through more than 250 online OPDs setup on eSanjeevani OPD.
    • Over 220 of these online OPDs are specialist OPDs and the rest are general OPDs.
    • eSanjeevani OPD was rolled out in April 2020 during the first lockdown in the country when all the OPDs were closed.
  • In line with the National Digital Health Mission, eSanjeevani is also boosting the digital health ecosystem in the country.
  • Leading 3 States in terms of adoption (number of consultations) of eSanjeevani are
    • Tamil Nadu (6,42,708).
    • Uttar Pradesh (6,31,019).
    • Karnataka (6,07,305).
  • The District with the largest number of consultations is Salem (Tamil Nadu) (1,23,658).
  • Data shows that citizens in tier-3 and 4 cities find eSanjeevani even more useful.
  • Further 18.15% of the patients on eSanjeevani OPD fall in the age group of up to 18 years and the majority of patients (50.35%) fall between 20 and 40 years whereas 22.89% patients are between 40 and 60 years of age and around 9% patients are senior citizens.
  • The data shows that female patients (54.66%) outnumber male patients on eSanjeevani OPD.
