  • The Government of India  approved the continuation of the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana (SSSY) and its components beyond 31.03.2021 for the Financial Years 2021-22 to 2025-26, with a total financial outlay of Rs.3,274.87 crore. 

About Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana (SSSY)

  •  The Government of India introduced the ‘Ex-Andaman Political Prisoners Pension Scheme in 1969 to honour the freedom fighters who had been incarcerated in the Cellular Jail at Port Blair. 
  • In 1972, to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Independence, a regular scheme for grant of freedom fighters’ pension was introduced. 
  • Thereafter, with effect from 01.08.1980, a liberalised scheme, namely the ‘SwatantrataSainikSamman Pension Scheme is being implemented. 
    • From the financial year 2017-18 onwards, the nomenclature of the Scheme has been changed as ‘Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana‘. 
  • Freedom Fighters and their eligible dependents have been sanctioned the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension and presently, there are 23,566 beneficiaries across the country covered under this scheme.  
    • The amount of pension has been revised from time to time and Dearness Relief is also given since 15.08.2016.
