In News 

  • Recently, Black Percher sighted in Seshachalam Hill for the first time.
    • The insect has been sighted in forest locations of Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

About 

  • Black Percher or Black Ground Skimmer (Diplacodes lefebvrii), a species of dragonfly. 
  • It belongs to the phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta and orders Odonata.
  • Habitat and Distribution :
    • It is mostly found in natural or man-made pools and at well-vegetated lakes and flooded depressions with stretches of marshy vegetation, in both inland and coastal situations.
    • It has a wide prevalence in Southern Eurasia and the whole of Africa.
  • IUCN Status: According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List of threatened species, Black Ground Skimmer was labelled in 2016 as of ‘least concern’. 

Dragonfly

  • Dragonfly, (suborder Anisoptera), also called darner, devil’s arrow, or devil’s darning needle, is any group of roughly 3,000 species of aerial predatory insects most commonly found near freshwater habitats throughout most of the world.
  • They are characterized by long bodies with two narrow pairs of intricately veined, membranous wings that, while generally transparent, may have coloured markings.
